Zao is a French Ecocert certified organic make-up line, that is now available in the UK.  When I first saw Zao’s website I was really pleased to see pressed matt eyeshadows and liquid foundations.  These are both things that I think lots of natural and organic brands lack, there seems to be a lot of loose shimmery eyeshadows along with loose mineral powder foundations.  While both have their place, I was keen to try the pressed shadows and the liquid foundations as I like to work with these more.

I have been using the mascara from Zao, which I have already mentioned in a previous post.  I really like it, although it does need a little powder on the lashes before application to help make it last.  I was also sent one of the shadows and a lipstick to try.  The texture of both of these feels great, I’ve had a play but not yet used them on a job as the colours have not been needed for anything yet.  As nice as the website is it’s not the same as trying make-up for real, so I had been looking forward to trying more of the range at The Organic and Natural Beauty Show where they were exhibiting this weekend just gone.

I was not disappointed, the range is great.  There are some really good pigmented eyeshadows – matt and pearly.  There are some good basic, easy to wear colours but also a new collection is launched each season that is more trend led.  The blushers are great too, they feel soft and blend well and again have great pigments.  They layer well on top of each other to help build intensity further.  I spoke to David Reccole, the man behind the brand and he has big plans for the range with many more colours to come.  He knows a thing or two about making make-up having been in the industry a while, David was also the brains behind Couleur Caramel.

The Silk Foundation goes on skin well and appears to have good longevity.  At the moment there are 6 colours, but hopefully that will change as the range grows; David is already getting requests for new colours.  It was really exciting to talk to him and hear how he wants Zao to develop as a brand.

There is a compact foundation which is also a creamy texture and a mineral powder foundation.  The concealer is in stick form and the coverage and consistency felt good.  There were some cool lipstick colours as well as neutrals and a good choice of matt textures, which I also think is very important in a range.

The ethics behind the brand are impressive too.  The packaging is made from Bamboo which allows Zao to have a negative carbon footprint, it is also refillable adding to its eco credentials.  Bamboo is 75% silica and this is used as an ingredient throughout the range for its skincare properties.  There are also lots of other lovely natural and organic ingredients that make the products good for you, and with no petrochemical derivatives they’re doing their bit for the environment too.

I really hope that Zao does well in the UK as it has a lot to offer and is more proof that you can have great organic make-up.

Love the eco-chic packaging of ZAO! I’m looking more into natural & organic make-up and this sounds fitting. Which products have impressed you the most?

When I saw them at the Organic and Natural Beauty Show, I really like the blushers. I’m currently trying some of the multipurpose pencils and the liquid liner, will report back!
