RMS Vintage Cake Liner…

I remember when I started my make-up course at London College of Fashion back in ’97 (eeeeeek) we were given a set kit of products to use. Within that we had a black cake liner and a brown cake liner, they were standard bits of kit to have, and they lasted me forever – literally; I think they’re probably still in a box at my mum’s some where. I can’t remember when gel liners came in, but they were a revelation – no more mixing with water to get the right consistency. The liner was there and ready to go, giving the perfect texture and colour straight away. I’ve always loved a gel liner since then and have had a variety of brands and colours in my kit. From a natural point of view however, gel liner has been hard to switch – eye liners in general have been one of the hardest things to change in my kit. So when RMS launched their new cake liner a couple of months or so back, I was really keen to give it a go.

I’m really impressed so far. Mixing sounds like a bit of a faff, but it’s actually not. I spray my brush with a bit of water/rose water and then work it into the cake to get the consistency I want, and then paint it on. You can mix it into a sheerer wash of colour or make it really dark and dense, giving you great versatility that is harder to get with a gel.

Using a brush for liner means you can really work it into the roots of your lashes, which gives them intensity and depth making them look longer and fuller. My current favourite and in the picture is an angled detailer by Nanshy. Just ‘pushing’ the colour into your lashes and not even drawing a line as such can make a huge difference to eyes.

The longevity of this cake is great, the main bulk of the line is still there at the end of the day. My flick has usually gone but I struggle to find anything that will stay there for me. I sometimes have to touch up the inner corners too, but I am an eye-rubber… I would recommend a loose setting powder under the eyes to set any concealer, and definitely on the eyelids otherwise the colour can transfer. I actually stopped wearing black liner for a while but I’m enjoying this pigment.

I’ve used it on jobs as well as myself, and have been happy with the results, as has the client. The cake can also be used as a matt eyeshadow which I haven’t done yet, but am planning to. It will last for ages and will never dry out – pots of gel liner do have a tendency to dry and crack. So a win win I think at the moment.. more colours please!! 🙂
