Kjaer Weis Cream Foundation

Kjaer Weis Cream Foundation…

I originally wrote this post on the Kjaer Weis Cream Foundation back in 2018 after discovering it a few years before that. It is a really great foundation and I’ve loved having it in my kit. It has been one of my favourite organic make up products and I’ve recommended it a lot over the years. The colour range has been steadily growing and now in 2023 there are now 18 shades.

The Kjaer Weis Cream Foundation was the first product in the refill system that started 10 years ago. When it first came out I bought one for myself to try – I initially just bought the refill which was a lot more economical for me at the time and a great way to try it (although not such a great idea if you want to take it out with you in your make-up bag!) I remember liking it a lot – the colour was great for me and the texture worked too.

The refill idea is brilliant, once you have made that initial investment of the compact, the price then becomes a lot kinder on your wallet. The original Iconic Edition of the case is made from an alloy of zinc, aluminium, magnesium and copper. They looks and feel quite luxurious and special which was the aim, these empty cases are £22 and the refills are £39.

In 2020 the Red Edition was released; these cases are made from recyclable paper – they are 100% recyclable, compostable, and refillable. They are also cheaper and lighter than the metal ones too, the foundation case is £8.50.

For us make-up artists the refill idea is perfect, we can make our own custom palettes which is something that always makes us happy! Of course, even if the foundation is for your own personal use, you could make your own palette.

I invested in some for my kit and absolutely loved using them – currently in need of a restock..

How to apply the Kjaer Weis Cream Foundation

A few people have said the Kjaer Weis Cream Foundation is a little dry on its own and hasn’t worked for their skin types. I’ve found that prepping skin very well beforehand can help with application, an oil for example can make the foundation glide onto skin. I like that it is a slightly drier texture as it gives it a bit more scope on how to use it. I always tend to mix it in with something else to make it a bit more fluid and then use it ‘neat’ where I want fuller coverage. Vapour Organic Beauty’s Soft Focus Instant Skin Perfector was always a favourite mixer, but sadly Vapour closed as a company at the end of 2022. Something like BYBI’s Strawberry oil would be wonderful to mix in or Kjaer Weis’s own primer to make it more luminous. Any lightweight moisturiser would work really well too.

I like to apply with a brush but fingers will work too. If using it ‘neat’ then warm between your fingers or back of your hand before applying to the face.

If you don’t like the idea of mixing Kjaer Weis have since launched their Liquid Foundations which are also firm favourites in the kit.

The colour range is also great and getting wider… here are some old swatches I did courtesy of Content Beauty…. these were back in 2018 – there are now 8 more.

and then in a slightly bluer light…

  1. What a timely post! I just got into makeup again back in October, since natural beauty has MAJORLY blown up in recent years and I’ve found that even though I’m mostly at home because I’ve become increasingly disabled and bedridden since 2007, trying new things and making up myself helps a lot with my mood and fatigue. For me makeup had always primarily been about art – making really unique, eye catching looks, though feeling attractive is always a plus of course. I’m hoping to get some photography accessories so I can at least post photos online (especially for others with my rare colouring).

Kjaer Weis immediately caught my eye with its gorgeous, luxe packaging (both the red leather-style boxes and the heavy stainless steel). I love that nearly everything that can be organic/natural, is. I love that it is pricey, as a snob – and I do feel the refill system makes it worth it. Yes a few shades use synthetic dyes but not a huge deal, and totally worth it for KW Red lipstick alone which is such a lovely red. I had the opportunity to try most of the KW line in person at a store, which was great as usually I have to order samples, living in a rural area and rarely traveling. I snapped up everything that worked with my colouring. Unfortunately, Lightness had not yet been released and the store display didn’t have either Happy or Lovely cream blushes, the only 2 that might work for me (I would love your opinion on which is most cool toned with the least brown). The other KW blushes are all MUCH too warm toned or brownish/muted for me.

Based on online swatches I’m pretty sure Lightness will work for me, at the very least as a concealer and under my eyes. The store I bought Lightness from (also Happy and several KW eye shadows) made the same recommendation as you, especially since I have very dry skin. But she didn’t recommend a specific product, so thank you for doing so! I have samples of both Vapour primer formulas coming in 902 (904 wasn’t available as a sample), which will hopefully help me decide on a formula – unless I can mix them? I prefer a dewy, luminous (hell, give me shimmer and glitter galore!) look but the Soft Focus ingredients are ones I know my skin loves and I’d certainly like to blur my fine lines and the option to fully cover my dark freckles.

I am either a 90 or 100 in Vapour but 90 may be too yellow for me. I’m hoping the pink primer, 904, can counteract any excess yellow tone in both KW Lightness and Vapour 90, if 100 is too dark. Currently my best match for non-powder foundation is Gressa 2 mixed with 50% pure white highlighter. It is the right tone just a few shades too dark, and too drying on its own. Which shade KW foundation do you wear? Silken? Like Porcelain looks like the best tone for me but it’s so much darker than Lightness! I recall that like the blushes, all the foundation shades in the display were very warm toned. I will try to remember to update you on how Lightness works for me given my colouration and very dry skin.

My biggest issues with the KW line are the limited highlighter colours (both are too dark and warm toned for me), the understated mascara (I need a much more dramatic volumizing formula given my wimpy lashes), and above all, the lip and eye pencils which are made primarily of hydrogenated oil. As you know the last is a real deal breaker for me. Nearly all ‘natural’ lip and eye pencils are made primarily of hydrogenated oil – it is a big problem especially as I must have eye pencils to do my makeup, they are as essential to me as mascara.

I prefer grey/silver, blue, purple, green, and white eye pencils and finding those natural and not hydrogenated is very difficult! Zosimo’s, now out of business, made both kinds of pencils in many colours but they are too soft to use precisely or sharpen (a common problem). I just found a small online company called Maia’s Minerals that makes both pencil types in many colours, using natural/partly organic ingredients. I’ll be picking that order up next week and I really hope they work. Ilia also just came out with some ‘lip crayons’ (not their lipstick crayons, these are lip liner pencils) in several shades. But so far only the official US site stocks them (I live in Germany). And I feel like RMS makes non-hydogenated lip liners too but I’ve only seen them on US sites. I may be thinking of another brand. Vapour eye pencils have good ingredients but limited colours; I wish they’d make more and some lip liners. Ilia eye liners are good too, and in more but still not many colours. Logona makes a type of lip liner with 2 different shades in the same family (red, pink, nude, etc) on either end, which I plan to try soon in red. Zuii lip and eye pencils are fine but very limited colours; I am VERY happy to have found emerald eye liner and mascara though. If you know of any other truly natural eye or lip pencils that perform well please let me know!

That dark skinned model IS gorgeous; I can’t tell that she’s wearing foundation at all. Amazing skin. I love all the KW promotional photos I’ve seen. KW has major style.

    1. Hi Julia,
I hope you are feeling well today. That’s great you’re getting back into make-up – you’re so right – make-up can really help to lift everything. I know I feel better if I’ve even just got mascara on.. I’d love to see some pictures of you with your make-up – you should post some for sure – it sounds like you’ve got a great knowledge of natural beauty so I’m sure people would be interested.

I love Kjaer Weis – if I could I’d have it all in my work and personal kit! I haven’t got Happy or Lovely in my kit but I’m visiting Content next week who stock them so I’ll have a look for you…
I have a feeling when I tried the foundation for me, I was wearing Like Porcelain but Silkness is probably better for me. I like both formulas of the Vapour primers but find the liquid is better for mixing so I have that one in my kit – I love it!! I love their foundations too – will be interesting to see what shade you are.. I was always a mix of the 110 and 115. STILL need to try Gressa – can’t believe I’ve not tried it – it’s on my wishlist..

I’m recently using Inika’s new mascara which is giving good length and volume to my lashes – might be worth a try..

That hydrogenated oil!!! Right I’m on a mission to find you some new pencils….
Yes Ilia have new pencils 🙂 🙂

Thanks again for all your lovely comments and sharing your knowledge!!
